I drove the Bowden Ford pace car for the speedcar feature races with GlenDix hanging on the back of the car, they were great nights.
A Great story on Bill Wigzell. thankyou.
A site dedicated to SA speedway and you have a photograph of an interstate track on your lead in page. However it is a great photo of a great Super Modified.
great historical pics ! would like to see one or two of a great pal of mine, the late eric stack (ross smith ) in his valiant at virginia......remember here comes the judge ! cheers.
Great. Thankyou
Hello again, I have found out more about my father-in-law, Harley Dillon. He raced speedcars at Rowley Park and was killed in the Encourage Handicap Race on 25 Feb 1966. He apparently raced solos about 10 years prior to that. He also was the social secretary of the Racing Drivers association at some point. The race he was killed in also had John Nash, Nick Jackemis and Jim Silvy in it (I think he landed upside down on John Nash who wasn't hurt). I'm hoping this helps jog peoples memory. We would like to hear from anyone that knew him, remembers him or has photos or stories from that time period.
nice site!
I also would like a Commemorative Coin if any are available for sale.
Hi Rhonda,
Thankyou for signing the guestbook and asking this question, however we have absolutely no idea at how many were even made. As far as we are aware they were released in 1979, the final season and that is when I purchased mine.
We will look into it and if we find anymore information we will post it on this site as well as email you.
Hi, I would like to know where I can get a Speedway Commemorative Coin for my husband. HIs father raced and was killed at the speedway in the 60's. I'd love to get one for him.
Very suprised at how many speedway tracks there were in south australia. I learnt a fair bit tonight. Keep the site going.
Great work. Nice site.
my mom used to passenger for G Atherton on sidecars back in the late 70s and its great to see a color pic of the old crater , to bring back friday nite speedway memories thank you

Hi Leanne. Thankyou for your comment. There's only a few of your dad but hopefully more to come. Please feel free to send any of your dad's pics to us, along with stories. Hope mum & dad are well.
just looking for anything on my dad mal leo. thanks
This site will be dedicated to the history of Rowley Park & Saloons in the earlier days. It will also branch out to other circuits in South Australia.
Just wondering why have photos from Virginia on a site named, Rowley Park. Not too bad though.
Good to see a web site dedicated to stock saloons in the early days. Keep up the good work
I really enjoyed those days as a spectator, but later raced in the 80s 90s in super sedans,
TQ's - My grandfather and uncle (Norm Kruger and his son Michael Kruger) raced TQ's in the 70's. Any information or photos you may have of them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Email: deankelly@live.com.au
Good luck to you all !!!
My grandfather is Nicky Bertram, listed on the Camden Raceway Plaque.
Any photos or videos from back then would be greatly appreciated - nickbert_81@hotmail.com
Unbelievable memories of my father Barry Trenbath racing sprintcars & then continuing attending every meeting for years. I recognise nearly all of the drivers names & have never found a speedway since with that atmosphere. I guess it was coz my dad new everyone & they all respected him so much.
Great reading about many of the riders I grew up hearing about. Long after my dad, John (Johnny) Kelvin gave up racing and moved to Canada, the stories of Rowley Park Speedway lived on and the characters he spoke of always seemed larger than life.
Thanks to everybody involved in establishing this web site. Rowley Park and the RDA played a big part in Bill's life and I have many great memories of fun nights at both venues among like-minded friends.
Great site for memories. My father (Jock Wilson) rode side cars late 40's early 50's . His passenger was Bill Amundsen, 2 of his boys (Robin and Kym) went over seas to ride. The only thing I have left of his riding days is his old kidney belt and a couple of photos.
A very imformative site on the great speedway and great clip of the final night with the late George Tatnell. A great speedway sadly missed. Keep up the good work.
My grandfather was Jack Wilson he was apparently involved in the early days of Rowley Park and he and his brother Larry also raced, if anyone has any info or pics i would love to see them. Thanks
very good and well laid out site and very informative. keep up the great work.
Like everyone else in Adelaide, Friday night was Speedway Night. The kids were little, and every Friday night we went along to watch, what was the best show ever. My son went on to ride Solos, and my late husband, sidecars interstate. Thanks so much for the memories, they are all good ones, and you have done a wonderful job on this site.
Yep 🙂 Many a Friday night was spent with a smile on my dial as I watched "The Champions" do battle on the dusty bowl of Rowley Park. Some of the best food available around Adelaide at the time and a guaranteed night of fun for everyone 🙂 Miss it dearly, Speedway Park was not the same 🙁
A great website .. but I remember earlier years around 1954. I was still at school and would catch the bus up the Port Road and then walk along Coglin Street and the traffic was bumper to bumper.
One night "Joe Blow" towing his speedcar pulled up and offered me a lift. I was so excited I don't think my feet touched the ground all night.
We would stand up against the safety fence at the south eastern end and get showered in mud. But I can't believe we used to slip out between the rails of the fence out onto the track while the race was still running to snatch the goggles the riders and drivers would flick off when they became covered in mud. We'd wait till they went passed and then run out and back before they came around again!
They were the days before "health & safety" made life boring. The hot dogs there were to die for and I think I had my first Chicko Roll at Rowley Park. Later in life I got the chance to drive a hot rod in a celebrity Demolition Derby a couple of times and then went there with an ambulance for St.John. What a hoot being out in the centre
I've been to Murray Bridge ... but nothing compares with Rowley Park. Does anyone remember that song they used to play while the water truck went around ? It went .."woop" in the middle and the whole crowd would go "woop" when it came up.
Very imformative site.
Keep up the good work.
I am RICK HARVEY's daughter and I would love some information or photos of him. Does anyone remember him?
I am the grand daughter of Vic Carne and I am looking for information on his speedway career. If any one has any information of articles I would be very appreciated to hear from you.
Contact me michelle@gmnservice.com.au.
Thank you
that rare program from Krubach 1980 ... i was there !
VERY INFORMATIVE WEBSITE ON SPEEDWAY AROUND SOUTH AUSTRALIA. MEMORIES.
WELL DONE.
SHANE LEE.
Many good memories. Well done on this site.
Fantastic memories of Rowley Park Speedway every Friday night as a kid. Standing up against the fence with a beer carton over my head with the eyes cut out getting covered in dust watching my favorites Johnny Boulger and Billy Wigzell. So many memories and so many champions. Rowley Park is sadly missed but it will never be forgotten, best times of my childhood.
Many great memories as a kid when my father who used to race there. A shame it closed, enjoyed those times. Well done at bringing back these memories.
Very sad rowley park speedway closed.
Thank you for these memories.
Great web site the best speedway ever. heaps of memories of Ken hitting the fence & winning a few good races in midgets. The guys always put on the best progam every friday night. there will never another speedway to surpass Rowley Park.
I was thrilled to stumble across this site. I hardly missed a meeting between 1968 and 1977, and this site brings back so many wonderful memories for me.
One year my mother (a karter) raced in the Powder Puff Derby finishing 3rd.
Thank you to everyone inolved with putting this site together.
Great site. My father raced in a stock car there and as a child I went along and I havent heard the music they played at the beginning of the meeting from then until now. It sent a shiver through me. Good memories. Well done.
its great the see my Late grandfather (Col Hennig) is still remembered 🙂
his love for cars & racing has been passed down from his two sons, my uncle (Steve Hennig, also known for his racing) & my father (Mark Hennig) who isn't well known for the racing he had done. then to my brother (Kenny Hennig) who also has a love for cars & drifts regularly at Mallala. i as the only female Hennig of the past 3 generations i too love racing.
just keep up the work & remember all those who raced at Rowley Park Speedway. 🙂
x
Great work. About twenty years ago I read a biography of an Australian allround sportsmen - sprintcar driver, professionsl woodchopper who was involved in a bad speedway accident - but I have forgotten his name and the name of the book. Does this ring a bell with anyone. Kind Regards
Luv your site - do you have pics or info on 'old smokey' midget speedway car?
Fantastic speedway, fantastic site. A distant memory now. Well done to those concerned keeping the memories alive.
Tammy. I recieved your email..... thankyou .... I tried responding twice but it got returned.I'll look into the registration and please feel free to submit or email me with any of your fathers pics or stories at rowleypark@hotmail.com Again thankyou for your email. Cheers Steve.
Excelent speedway and should still be up and running. Many good memories of probably one of the greatest speedway's of all time. Well done.
Thankyou every one for your positive comments and memories everyone. All comments whether positive or negative are appreciated.... Steve Brown.... I tried emailing some information on what you asked for but it got returned and I am not sure if you actually recieved it.... Again thankyou every one and if you have photo's or stories from mainly Rowley Park or other South Australian circuits please keep them coming in....
Thanks for a great site! I live on Francis Ridely Circuit probably on top of the mound where I used to watch the bikes and midgets race! I'd love to get some of the photos to frame and put up in our house.
By the way, when they named all the street in this area they used older historical names (Like Francis Ridely after the ship) rather than some of the racing names.
My father in law (Ramon Munn) raced side cars at Rowkey Park and my 'milkie' (remember when milk was delivered?!) Mr. Foote raced there and was killed in an accident ther I believe?
Anyway, great site! Brought back lots of memories.
Steve 🙂
Not bad
Excelent website and noticed always being updated. Good to see new photo's. Keep it up.
Well done for keeping the memories of not only Rowley Park but other speedways from the early days. Many memories and a credit to you. Thankyou and keep it up.
Great Speedway & great memories, well done to all concerned for keeping alive the memory of Rowley park.
Memories. Methanol and Dolomite. Great site.
Excelent and interesting speedway site about the great speedway itself. Keep up the good work.
So many good memories watching my father in the early 70's. Along with all the local, interstate and overseas drivers and riders.
Many good memories of a great speedway facility.
My memories of Rowley Park before we moved to the Barossa Valley. We lived at Croydon Park, then at Prospect, during 1956 and '57. My dad, Eddie White, was the mechanic at Jack Larritt's Golden Fleece service station at Torrens Road, Ovingham, and Jack owned racing car number ten, 'Old Smokey' which dad prepared for the track.
My brother Gary and I, aged five and seven respectively in 1957, used to go to the track with dad every Friday night. We loved the polka music blaring out of the horn speakers all around the track, the smell of castor oil laced petrol, the taste of Chicko Rolls, the swell and the noise of the crowd, the yellow lights, the roar of the engines, the speed and the constant struggle for grip and sideways-arcing slide of the cars and bikes, the acrobatics of the riders and sidecar men, and the breathless, fearful excitement when somebody crashed. We were shaken coldly and bluntly when Brian Bennett fell from a sidecar and was run over on the fifteenth of November, 1957. He landed spreadeagled and hardly had time to move when a following bike collected him. He did not move at all and, young as we were, we knew he was dead.
The closest we saw 'Old Smokey' get to winning was a respectable third. Dad took the family to the Barossa valley in 1958 and we never went to Rowley Park again, but we must have gone for about seventy race meetings in a row, and except for the night Brian Bennett died, enjoyed every night there.
great aussie speedway. sadly closed. many memories sitting on the coglin street end watching great names like laurie hodgson, johnny boulger, john crowhurst and wigzell etc etc.
Very good and informative website. Congratulations to Glenn Dix on being awarded the OAM in 2009. Truly well deserved on Australia Day.
Brings back many good memories. Rowley Park should still be operating. Well done.
Great speedway great location. It was motor racing at its best. Sadly missed and should have never been redoveloped into another housing estate. Typical South Australian Government. Good website, well done.
it was one of the best sppedways in australia...brings back many childhood memories...sadly missed
Congratulations to Glenn on being awarded the OAM in the 2009. Australia Day Honours List
Good site. So many good memories of Rowley Park and others likes of Waikeries and Renmark Speedways.
Many good memories watching drivers like wigzell, Agars, Barrows etc. buzzing around this speedway with my family and friends. Sad its gone.
my dad steve bass used to talk about speedway days all the time my days will be coming soon
Great site. Would be good to see more on bikes and Gillman Speedway. I wasnt born unfortunately when Rowley Park shut down but it seemed to be a top speedway so close to Adelaide.
Very good and imformative web site.
Melbourne Bar and Bistro, Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne CBD
Cool site. I just registered.
Great speedway site. Many memories of speedways in South Australia. The smell of methanol.
Happy birthday Steve. Hope you had a good one.
Thanks Graham for your positive comments and information, its been updated. Very much appreciated. Thanks to for the Birthday wishes.
Hi there. Great site,I can almost smell the wonderful aroma of Rowley Park in the 50's. Reading the info on the past announcers over the time the great venue entertained us,there is one name missing from those mentioned who came before the O'conners,Kelvins and Sabines and that was the late Mel Cameron from radio station 5DN. My recolections of Mel Cameron extend back to the 50's and his manner on the mike made all who were there feel like they were part of the speedway itself. Not only did he keep every one up to date on all the happenings of the racing but always gave great commentary on the other events like the annual fireworks display. I could prattle on for ages about 'the Park' .Keep up the good work on this wonderful sight. Thanks for the memories.
Happry Birthday Steve. Hope its a good one
Happy Birthday Steve. Keep up the good work
Many good memories of Rowley Park. Should still be in operation.
Very imformative and interesting. Always good to see new information and photo's. Keep up the good work.
Great speedway site. Well done
I remember going to rowley with parents who had friends with a house on coglin street where we used to watch from their shed roof. Excelent race track with many good memories. Great web site. thankyou.
Congratulations on a great site. Sitting up here in Darwin and remebering those fantastic Friday nights. Who can forget "suddenly 1" and "suddenly 2" and the sound of those Vincent sidecars. Cash must have been short back then. I can remember my brother and me always getting in for free by walking through the gate backwards. ha ha ha love it.
Any pictures, news or clippings would be appreciated.
My father , the late Gordon " Pud " Freeman, would tell us of his days at Rowley Park & other tracks on his outfits. This site brings back those memories. Thanks.
I started riding passenger for Keith Sewell in 1978 after he won the Australian sidecar title at Rowley park. We made many visits to the track back then and enjoyed the hospitality the South Australians put on for us. We had some great races between Deane Taylor. Dave Adams and many of the top South Australian riders. It was a shame when it closed and moved to Speedway park. It wasn't the same.
When Thunderbird Raceway closed im still not sure but will try to find out. On to it now
Thanks for your very positive comments Mathew and others.
Thunderbird Raceway was on the right hand side heading towards Adelaide but on the Northern end of Virginia. Thunderbird Raceway was at the main oval and was refurbished when it was closed. I remember the Primary School being right next door. Yes we to have many great memories of Rowley Park, Murray Bridge, Speedway City etc:
What an awesome site. I never knew that SA had so many speedways
My father was a photographer at rowley park. He and myself are quite clearly seen on that Rowley Park VHS video showing pics and footage from the reunion night in I believe 2001
I used to ride in the water truck now and then in 74 to 79 during the interval.
I was only very young in Rowleys final six years but I remember it well
As for Speedway City - I live in virginia and always have and it is not iout in the never never and I love the place
Yes I prefer to go to Murray Bridge but I still support my local track (I'm real close to it) at every meeting the super sedans are
running
Can someone tell me about thunderbird speedway at Virginia. Where was this in my town. When did it close?
Great site for our generation. Many great memories of a great speedway track. That was speedway.

Great site and good to see the photo's of Rowley long ago and now the estate that is there. My grandpa raced there in the 1960's.
Many good memories smelling the methanol in a brilliant atmosphere so close to the city. Rowley should still be operating today. Id expect the place would be selling out week after week because of its atmosphere and location. Great website.

Great Aussie speedway site
Thanks again Peter for your enquiry. I edited the second main picture on our front page. The entrance to the pits was just left of the start / finish line. We hope this may assist you. Good luck.
Thanks for the info re the location, another bit of info that might help me. Where on that pic of the track is the pits. I can get my bearings knowing the location. And I've got a great memory of being about 10 years old going with my Dad to the pits for the first time and meeting Bill Wigzell. He seemed like a gladiator just returned from a great battle, and seeing Suddenly up close was amazing!
Top site, very imformative about not only Rowley Park but also speedways Australia and World wide in this era. Keep up the great work. Thankyou.
Peter, thankyou for your comment. On our home page the second track photo shows cars on Torrens Road. On the bottom left you can see some factories. They are actually on Coglin Street and the main entrance for competitors was from Coglin Steet. I hope this gives you a bit better idea of where Rowley Park Speedway was located.
I've just moved into Brompton in the estate that was built on the old Rowley Park track. I've been trying to find a map that shows the position of where the track was in relation to the surronding streets. If anyone can direct me to one would be great!
Would love to be able to pinpoint some of my favourite vantage points from back in the early 70's!
Bill Wigzell and Bill Barrows were my favs... great website
Great website fantastic to see about my favourite driver the legendary "Wizard" Bill Wigzell in the most famous race car ever "Suddenly" I am proud to say he is a personal friend and mentor and has been for many generations of racecar fans
Many good memories. Sad to see its gone. I monkeyed sidecars and had a ball.
Is Phil Crump in pics advertising Australian dried fruit ?
great to see bikes on this site. Keep them coming.
Great site and I also have been watching over time. Be good to swee more driver profiles and what these guys are up to these days. Keep up the good work.
Hi I have been watching this site for a while now. However there are a lot of photos of car 6 Phil Hoskin but no driver profile. I can remember that he owned Port Motor Wreckers. Is a driver profile on him in the pipeline? It would be great to know more about the man & his driving history.
Roger

We would rather go to Murray Bridge Speedway any day over Speedway City.
Not sure about the best speedway track in Australia but sure beats Speedway City. Should have never been moved out in the never never.
Many great memories of this great speedway, arguably the best ever in Australia in its era. Keep up the good work.
Great to see this history, I spent every Friday night there for years as crew for a stocker. MISS THIS GREAT TRACK & ATMOSPHERE

Thanks for your comments Col. We unfortunately havent come across information on your father as yet and are only about one tenth of the way through the information we have for this web site. If you would like to email us with information, pictures and even a profile on your father we will be more than happy to use them on this web site. Thanks again Col and everyone else that has left comments. Please feel free to send us stories, pics etc. to rowleypark@hotmail.com
Not mentioned in the history of the track so far are ALL the commentators that came and went trackside, one being my Father JIM CHAMINGS who, if I remember correctly was the commentator up until 1959. JIM CHAMINGS was also a member of the RDA at the time and also called the races at another track in the Adelaide Hills area. Many will remember the work he performed in personally promoting Rowley Park at the time during his 5 year term as the Midnight til dawn and breakfast announcer on Radio 5KA. I will attempt to locate the many photos and parephenalia that he kept of Rowley Park. JIM CHAMINGS passed away about 5 years ago in Adelaide after a carreer in Radio & TV as a news anchorman.
I have photos of Camden Speedway but are copies . ill send them
